BTTG has developed a process that compresses and heats either fiber assembiles or oriented polymers, which results in a sheet that has superior mechanical properties, particularly in the direction transverse to that in which the fibers have been aligned. The process is described in European patent 2,253,420. The compaction pressure during the process does not affect the mechanical properties of the sheets. During the process, a portion of the fibers melt and recrystallize, thereby ensuring fiber bonding. Upon cooling, the molten materials recrystallize to give a phase with a lower melting point than the original fibers. This process yields products with good energy-absorbing properties. Suggested applications include orthodintic brackets, such as bone implants and body armor.
