The physics underlying the interaction of ultrasound with the sample in advanced ultrasonic nondestructive evaluation methods was examined. these methods are used to characterize composites. The properties of complex, three-dimensional composites that limit the ability of ultrasound to detect flaws were identified and characterized. In the initial experiments, plezoelectric receivers measured the capability of these measurements to detect defect-mimicking inhomogeneities in the pressence of background phase distortion was evaluated. In subsequent experiments, the effects of ultrasonic propagation through composites with inherently complex architectures were examined.
