To predict the evolution of global textile supply and manufacturing, researchers analyzed world textile raw material supplies and inventories between 1987 and 1994. A stable stock stituation characterized the first five years, followed by falling inventories and rising demand. Since 1992, however, stocks in both yarns and fabrics have decreased. A more balanced relationship between supply and demaned in the future must be based on the growth of textile consumption, elimination of surplus capacity, and curtailed investments in new machinery and productive capacities. Sustained recovery of the world's textile market rests on the reduction of pressure at the supply end and the development of textile markets in East Asia, excluding The People's Republic of China.
