Scientists at the Agricultural Research Service began studying alternative solvents during the energy crisis of the 1970s. Their goal was to find effective solvents to remove oil and undesirable pigments. Renewable solvents that did not rely on petroleum became the focus, but the ideal solvent (ethanol) was too costly. During the 1980s and 1990s, they sought to achieve cleaner, safer, and cost effective production. A research team led by Peter Wan discovered the effectiveness of isohexane as an oil removing solvent that also offered energy savings. Research results may lead to the use of isolhexane to obtain more oil from cottonseeds. Approximately 1.4 billion pounds of cottonseed oil are consumed annually. Its main use is in snack production, but it is also used in tanning lotions.
