The carpet market is weak throughout Europe, particularly in residential sectors. In most cases, the European carpet industry is characterized by overproduction and very competitive pricing. Although the contract market has been slightly stronger, price competition has been extreme in installations calling for commodity products. Residential carpet markets account for approximately 35 percent of the total European flooring market of 1,800 million square meters. Industry observers, who attribute reduced sales of carpets to growth in wood, wood laminates, and area rugs, predict that overall production and consumption in all carpet sectors will decrease in 1997. The carpet markets and industries are described for Belgium, Germany, the United Kingdom, The Netherlands, France, Italy, Spain, Denmark, and Portugal.
