The development and use of superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) are reviewed. SAPs are cross-linked acidic polymers (usually polyacrylic acid) in the sodium salt form. They can absorb many times their own weight of aqueous fluids and retain then under an exerted pressure. A more recent development has been SAPs in fibre form. The benefits of this physical form are outlined. Properties, markets, production technology, current products and probable future developments are discussed.
