Chitosan is ideally suited for a fiber forming technique using the shear precipitation of polymers from solution. The resulting chitosan fibers, which are short and cotton-like, are highly oriented and crystalline. Moreover, they are easily processed into nonwoven structures and papers for medical applications. Chitosan may also be modified through such techniques as graft copolymerization of vinyl monomers to the fiber surface. Abstract.
