Researchers investigated several extraction methods for removing residual natural waxes and processing lubricants from cotton fibers, yarns, and fabrics. Conventional solvent extraction generates problems with environmental toxicity and cost. A modified quantitative supercritical fluid extraction mehtod removed wax and oil impurities as well as the slovent based Soxhlet extraction mehtod. The experiments used four different supercritical fluid extractors. Carbon dioxide was modified with 1,1,1-trichloroethane or ethanol. Differential scanning calorimetry, spectroscopy, gas chromatography, and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry analyses yielded the volumes of extractables recovered. 15 refs.
