A review of thermoplastic adhesivs used in apparel manufacture focuses on their modification via plasticization for use in bonding and doubling fabrics. Waxes obtained by polyethylene waste pyrolysis have applications as plasticizers for polyethylene adhesives. A wax admixture of approximately 1-5 percent lowers the melting temperature of polyethylene, reduces hardness, and improves flow properties and thermal tenacity. The quantity of plasticizer in the composition varies depending on the thermal stability and type of the fabric. The most important property for plasticized polyethylene appears to be thermal tenacity. At 5 percent plasticizer, thermal tenacity is approximately 7.5 times better than that of pure polyethylene. 5 refs.
