Hindered phenols are currently the best stabilizers for polyurethane fibers. When combined with hindered phenol, the benzofuranone class of stabilizers povides even greater protection against oxidation than do hindered phenols alone. Benzofuranones improve the initial color, color after long term heat again, gas fade, and chlorine resistance of polyurethane fibers. benzofuranones serve as hydrogen atom donators and as both carbon centered and oxygen centered radical traps. Benzofuranone stabilizers, which are soluble in most of the solvents used in polyurethane fiber manufacture, are added to the polymer solution prior to spinning.
