Evaluation of the Treatment on Promix Fiber Using Proteases on the Market.

Researchers studied enzyme treatment of Promix fiber with proteases to improve water absorptivity. They used the weight loss of the fiber to evaluate the effect of the treatment. They described the weight loss at a time t, W(t), during the treatment process using the equation W(t) = T[1-exp(-kt)], where T indicates the ultimate weight loss and k indicates the rate constant of the process. A computer curve fitting method with experimental data determined the parameters of the equation. The ultimate weight loss of the fiber was approximately 4 percent. The proteases and treatment conditions did not determine the degradation of the fiber, but did determine the rate constant of the process. Results also suggest that the degradation of the protein components. The computer curve fitting method proved useful for phenomenological analysis of the protease treatment. 6 refs.
