An overview of production trends in the 1996 international textile industry highlights fiber production and consumption, including general trends, world cotton supply and demand, regional patterns of supply and demand, global wool supply and demand, and manmade fibers; trade and production trends by region and country, the United States, the European Union, and Asia; and foreign trade statistics. In 1996, manmade fibers gained market share from natural fibers. Cellulosic fiber production, however, declined after several years of growth. Despite lower production, experts predict that cotton stocks will rise. Rising demand spurred renewed growth of the United States textile indusry, but apparel production continued to decline.
