Japan's textile and apparel exports declined 4 percent to $3.57 billion during the first six months of 1997. Textile exports, however, increased 10 percent compared with the first half of 1996. Exports of acrylic staple fibers increased 6 percent to 146,000 tons. Exports of rayon staple fibers declined 10 percent. Exports of polyester staple fibers declined 14 percent. Rayon filament exports increased 16 percent. Exports of polyester filaments remained stagnant. Exports of woven woolen fabrics increased 29 percent. Exports of nylon filament woven fabrics increased 6 percent. Apprael exports declined 14 percent during the first half of 1997. Exports to the People's Republic of China, Italy, the United States, and South Korea declined 11 percent, 26 percent, 25 percent, and 30 percent, respectively.
