After pretreatment with strongly-interacting solvents, dimethyl-formamide (DMF) and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), and then with the ultraviolet radiation and low temperature plasma treatment, the relative free radical intensity within the treated maramid Nomex (m-PIA) and p-aramid Kevlar (p-PTA) fibers were studied by means of electron-spin-resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. The results tell us that after ultraviolet radiation and low temperature plasma treatment, free radicals formed in the aramid fibers. The free radical intensity has a close connection with the fiber itself and the structural changes of the fiber caused by the pretreatment with solvents and when the temperature increases the stability of the free radicals decreases.
