The current commercial situation relating to the production of lyocell solvent-spun cellulosic fibres is reviewed. Lenzing are starting a production plant in Austria in July 1997 with an initial capacity of 12 000 tonnes per annum and plan to double this within two years. With Courtaulds bringing on a further 42 000 tonnes per annum at the end of the year in the UK, the world capacity by the year 2000 is expected to be 120 000 tonnes per annum. Information is presented on these plants and on the markets for the fibre. Details are also given of the pilot plant installed at the Thuringian Textile and Plastic Research Institute, Germany.
