The article describes the use of flax as a fibre for reinforcing plastic materials to produce high mechanical resistance as well as biological degradation and low abrasiveness. The use of flax fibre instead of glass fibre to reinforce plastic materials has been studied. Good results have been obtained with non-saturated polyester and epoxide resins reinforced with flax fibres. A composite flax/polypropylene fibre for use in car upholstery has been produced commercially by the Belgian company Belgalin. Flax fibres contained from plants already used for oil production have been used in anti-erosion products in the UK.
