Pakistan and India are two of the world's leading producers, consumers, and exporters of raw cotton. Due to pest and disease problems, Pakistan's 1996-1997 cotton crop decreased 17 percent. Cotton production in India, however, reached near record levels. The textile industry is the largest industry in both Pakistan and India. Raw cotton and value added cotton are key sources of foreign exchange. Analysts predict continued growth in cotton production and consumption in both countries, although cotton's share of the total fiber market will likely decline. The implementation of more open trade policies in the future will allow Pakistan and India to increase their production for export of cotton apparel and other finished products.
