Turkey's climate and soil are the primary reasons that it enjoys the second largest yields, 2.2 bales per acre, of the 16 leading cotton producing countries. The major cotton growing regions in Turkey lie in the central and eastern areas bordering Syria and Iraq. Cotton acreage will increase dramatically when water is available from a series of dams and canals currently under construction. Officials of the Guney-dogu Andadolu Porjesi predict that 80-90 percent of the irrigated land will be dedicated to cotton. Turkish growers are also experimenting with machine harvesters. Although growers are paid a nonsubsidized world price for cotton, producers are paid at the gin for seed cotton.
