In 1996-1997, Pakistan will likely maintain its status as a leading supplier of raw cotton. In September 1997, industry analysts predicted that Pakistani cotton production would increase 1 percent (to 8.2 million bales) over 1995-1996, when production increased 30 percent. Several factors contributed to past production increases that may dicate the ultimate production for the 1996-1997 coton crop: expanded planting of cotton varieties with high tolerance of leaf curl virus, reduced whitefly populations, stable supplies of irrigation water, and strict enforcement of pesticide regulations. Even if ideal weather conditions occur during growing and harvesting, yields will remain below those of 1991-1992 because the LCV-tolerant varieties have substantially lower yield potentials.
