Economics of Transgenic Cotton: Some Indications Based on Georgia Producers.

Grower concerns about the economic costs and returns associated with Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) cotton varieties initiated a statewide field trial in Georgia comparing Bt and non-Bt cotton varieties grown in close proximity and under similar production systems. Data concerning yield, returns, and costs provided initial indications of potential economic benefits. Bt cotton varieties produced an average yield of 104 pounds of lint per acre more than the same porducer's non-Bt variety. The number of spray applications for insect fewer per acre on the Bt vareities than on the non-Bt varieties. Average gross economic advantage of Bt cotton totaled approximately $100 per acre. 8 refs.
