Analysis conducted an economic evaluation of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) cotton technology using data from two farm trials in South Carolina. Because thresholds were not exceeded, growers did not spray for tobacco budworm (Heliothis virescens) or cotton bollworm (Helicoverpa zea). At least one application of methyl paqrathion was required to control stinkbugs. In both sites, cost savings from reduced insecticide use were evident. Actual experimental yield for Bt cotton was higher than for non-Bt cotton in the Barnwell County site, but lower than for non-Bt yield in the Lee County site. Further statistical analysis revealed no significantl difference between the yields of Bt and non-Bt cotton at both sites. Economic analysis that assumes constant yield levels demonstrated that Bt cotton was profitable at both sties. Bt cotton, however, was riskier than non-Bt cotton. 13 refs.
