One of the problems associated with treatment of cotton seeds with chemicals is known as dusting off, which is a loss of chemicals during handling. The use of polymer coatings on the cotton seeds has the potential to decrease dusting off. Research on the effectiveness of these coatings used two polymers, Dyancoat and Opacoat Red. Dynacoat generally had no effect on dusting off even at higher application rates, whereas Opacoat Red decreased dusting off at all application rates. Opacoat Red was most effective when the rate of polymer increased or the polymer was applied as a mixture with the chemical tested (a fungicide). Neither polymer decreased the establishment percentage in a cold chamber at 18 degrees centigrade. Dynacoat did not decrease the imbibition of water through 12 hours at 20 degrees centigrade. 4 refs.
