Experiments on the degradatin of polyethylene in a fixed bed flow reactor compared the effectiveness of three zeolite and silica-alumina (SA) catalysts. HZSM-5, HY, and H-mordant (HM) zeolites differed in acidic properties and pore structures. Polyethylene degradation at 375 degrees centigrade over HZSM-5 catalyst resulted in the production of gasoline-like fuel oils. Nitrogen adsorption determined surface areas of fresh and used catalysts, indicating the degree of coke deposition. HZSM-5 demonstrated no deactivation due to the low coke yield for the reaction. SA gradually deactivated over time as coke deposited in the large pores. Coke filled HY pores and blocked HM channels, which rapidly deactivated both catalysts. 20 refs.
