Research assessed color changes in 15 lots of merino and crossbred wools after two years of storage. The study determined the relationship between incubated color and clean color; the effects of storage on staple length and strength, resistance to compression, potassium content, and pH of extracted water; and the effect of dumping method (tripacks, single dumped bales, and farm bales) on color change. Clean yellowness change averaged +0.05 units per month, but varied from -0.01 to +0.11 depending on the lot. These changes were less than half the rate of change in greasy color. Incubated yellowness deteriorated at a rate similar to greasy yellowness. Both clean yellowness change and incubated yellowness change were lower in farm bale stored lots. 22 refs.
