Lyocell fibers derive from a solvent process using wood pulp. An important characteristic of lyocell fibers is the presence of microfibers on their outer surface. Courtaulds' lyocell fiber is absorbent, biodegradable, and suitable for medical applications. Lyocell fibers have a smooth, circular cross section. Fiber structure consists of aligned molecules that are bonded together into bundles. Fibrillation occurs when the fiber is wet and swollen, which makes these fibers highly suitable for the manufacture of filter fabrics with good tear resistance and opacity. Filtration tests using sodium chloride aerosol with an average particle size of 0.6 micron confirmed the superiority of lyocell filter fabrics over conventional wood pulp filter fabrics. Data compare the count, dry tenacity, dry elongation, wet tenacity, and wet elongation of lyocell, viscose, cotton, and polyester fibers.
