Why do we need a lubricant?

In this paper, which was presented at the recent SDCANZ Symposium, the importance of fibre lubrication is reviewed. Following an outline of the function of the lubricant in reducing fibre/metal and fibre/fibre friction, the history of lubrication of wool and the primary requirements of a lubricant for the woolen spinning system, the steps involved in developing a lubricant are discussed. The importance of considering environmental aspects are also included.
