Regeneration of Silk Fibroin from Silk Waste and Its Applications.

Research studied the regeneration of silk fibroin powder from silk waste by dissolution and precipitation methods. Two different solvent systems, formic acid/calcium chloride and lithium bromide, regenerated the fibroin powder. A test of the regenerated fibroin powder as a finishing agent dissolved and applied the material to polyester fabric. Assessments of the regenerated fibroin fiber and the fabric showed that both solvent systems were effective. The regenerated powder showed some changes in crystalline structure, viscosity behavior, and regain values. The regenerated fibroin finished polyester fabric showed increased moisture absorbant properties. 12 refs.
