Lyocell is a 100 percent natural cellulosic fiber derived from wood pulp using a solvent spinning process. Courtaulds Fibers and Lenzing each manufacture lyocell fibers. Lyocell features high strength in both the wet and dry states, very high modulus, low shrinkage, and dyeability using cellulosic fiber dyes and dyeing methods. During processing, lyocell fibers have a tendency to fibrillate, which requires specific control procedures. Fibrillation increases with mechanical load, higher temperatures, and more alkaline pH. During rope processing, lower liquor ratios increase fibrillation. Crosslinking agents and some multifunctional reactive dyes help control fibrillation through interfibrillar crosslinking of the reactive groups with adjacent cellulose chains. 4 refs.
