Ramie - king of natural fibres

Ramie is hygroscopic in nature and typical surface characteristics made it difficult to spin by conventional spinning processes. But it can be spun in a modified spinning system used for other natural fibres like flax and jute which have long staple length. The physical and chemical properties of ramie fibres are described. The main advantage of ramie is its strength, but the downside is its brittleness. Around 120,000 tons are produced per year, with China, Brazil and the Philippines the main suppliers.
