Combustion phenomena in polymers and fibres. General problems

Continuous growth of manufacturing and consumption of polymeric materials has been observed for a many years. The majority of polymers, however, demonstrate undersirable inflammability, causing many disasters and material losses, therefore investigation into the reduction of polymer flammability is one of the main problems to be solved in polymer science. In this paper basic phenomena accompanying combustion of polymers have been considered, ie, pyrolisis and flammable gas mixture formation, spontaneous and forced ignition, flame generation, spreading of fire, smoke and poisoning gases formation, as well as physical and chemical factors promotion fire extinguishing and chemicals applied as fire retardants in polymers.
