Regeneration of silk fibroin from silk waste and its applications

Silk waste can be reutilised by extracting the fibroin powder and using it in various industries. The regeneration of fibroin powder from silk waste may be possible by using either formic acid and calcium chloride system in the ratio 10:1 or by using lithium bromide solution. Regeneration is accompanied by some changes in the crystalline structure which is evident from the X-ray diffraction, viscosity behaviour and the moisture regain values of the regenerated powder. In this paper the powder is used for finishing polyester with the viewpoint that it would impart better moisture absorbing properties to the material, without affecting the inherent properties of the polyester. The results are shown.
