summary form only given. a measuring system based on digital image processing has been developed and constructed. samples with certain mass are prepared and regularly distributed to cover certain area. similarly reference samples for the background fibres and for the different types of foreign matter have to be prepared and tested. there are two modes of measurements, namely measurements with transmitted light and measurements with reflected light. the former is used to determine the foreign matter content (or trash content) by area and/or by mass with or without sorting or identification of the different types of contaminating foreign matter. the latter or both modes combined together can also be used for sorting, identification and counting of the different types of foreign matter
