the transport of cotton bales in closed rail wagons presents severe problems when unloading, due to swelling of the bales. in order to improve productivity the bale size should be increased to 3-5 tonne, and unloading should be mechanised. two methods of unloading, using a crane mounted carriage which is brought into the wagon or using a compact fork lift truck inside the wagon, are proposed. a mechanised warehouse suitable for storing up to 2400 tonnes of cotton in bales of size 970*595*735 mm is described having a single gantry crane. the economic benefit of this handling and storage system are indicated
