the authors' study has demonstrated that, under conditions similar to those used in fabricating aramid/epoxy and ecpe/epoxy composites, and using a functionally equivalent epoxy resin, surface amine groups on aramid and ecpe fibres react chemically with an epoxy resin. this result provides strong evidence that the increases in interlaminar properties of ecpe/epoxy composites after ammonia plasma-treatment of the fibres is a direct result of covalent chemical bonding between the fibre surface amine groups and the epoxy groups in the resin. the result also clarifies the improvements in aramid/epoxy composite interlaminar properties. the improvements in this case are limited by the morphology of the aramid fibres, and cohesive failure seems to be the ultimate determinant of fibre-matrix adhesion
