fibre coatings and the mechanical properties of carbon fibre/nylon 6 composites

the authors studied the effect of seven kinds of coating on the mechanical properties of 20 wt. percent carbon fibre/nylon 6 composites. it was found that most coatings did not have any significant effect on the properties, a pes (polyether sulphone) coating raised the properties slightly (by about 5 percent ) and an ep (epoxy) coating reduced the properties substantially (by about 20 percent ). the pes coating remained solid during fabrication, adhered strongly as a thick layer to the fibres and resisted fibre pullout. on the other hand, the ep coating with its very low softening temperature appeared to influence the properties of the matrix
