fibers and plates of sic were treated in cr and v powders at 1273-1543 k. as a result, continuous coatings were formed on the sic surface. microstructural analysis employing sem with eds, xrd and aes showed that the coatings had a layered structure, the surface layer always being the metal carbide. the coatings may serve as diffusion barriers and improve bonding integrity of sic fibers in metal matrix composites and of bulk sic-metal joints
