the influence of the fabrication procedure, particularly chemical surface treatment and edge protection, on si surface barrier gamma detector noise levels is reported. high quality low noise detectors result when the au-si detector fabrication process is up-graded by the introduction of additional chemical treatment steps. these include a surface stabilization process and edge protection. the way each of these lowers the noise level was investigated and analysed. for this purpose a /sup 57/co source was used and the noise spectra obtained by a multichannel analyser were considered. reverse current-voltage characteristics were also plotted. the noise of an up-graded 1 cm/sup 2/ active area detector at a 75 v reverse bias was found to be 5 kev at room temperature
