fiber optic chemical sensors capable of detecting glucose and penicillin were developed. each consists of a polymer membrane that is covalently attached to the tip of a glass optical fiber. the membrane contains the enzyme and a ph-sensitive fluorescent dye (fluorescein). a signal is produced when the enzyme catalyzes the conversion of the analyte (glucose or penicillin) into a product (gluconic or penicilloic acid, respectively) that lowers the microenvironmental ph of the membrane and, consequently, lowers the fluorescence intensity of the dye. each sensor is capable of responding to analyte concentrations in the range of approximately 0.1 to 100 mm. the penicillin optrode response time is 40 to 60 s while that for glucose is approximately 5 to 12 min
