the authors studied the strength characteristics of fiber light guides made from ge/sub 5/as/sub 38/s/sub 57/ glasses having a protective polymeric coating of fluoroplastic-42. they find that coating of the light guides leads to an increase in their average strength by a factor of 2.5 to 3. this makes possible wider use of such light guides
