chemical, x-ray, and crystal-optical analysis are used to investigate the process of formation of silicon nitride fibers during the nitriding of silicon with ammonia. it is shown that the yield and morphology of the fibers are determined by the reaction temperature and time and the purity of the original silicon. the fibers which are formed consist of both modifications of silicon nitride
