reviews various fracture preservation and cleaning techniques for fractography. these techniques apply essentially to chemical damage. the preservation techniques include storing fractures in moisture limiting containers (i.e. desiccators) and using corrosion-preventative surface coatings such as axle grease, adherent plastic coatings, and solvent-cutback petroleum-base compounds. the following cleaning techniques are discussed in detail' dry air blast and soft organic fiber brush cleaning, organic solvent cleaning, replica stripping, water-based detergent cleaning, cathodic cleaning and chemical etch cleaning
