macedo et al. (1976) have reported a method for producing optical waveguide fibers with minimum signal loss by a relatively inexpensive commercial process, of which an integral part is the removal of ionic impurities (especially fe/sup 2+/) and transition metal ions so that signal loss by extrinsic absorption may be reduced. since the literature reports indicate incomplete removal of alkali ions and the retention of an appreciable amount of sio/sub 2/ which was originally in the soluble phase of borosilicate glass, the question arises as to the effectiveness of impurity removal by acid leaching. since the ionic impurities are preferentially segregated into the acid-soluble phase, an analytical study was conducted to determine the extent of removal of components during acid leaching of a phase-separated borosilicate glass
