lower imports in major asian markets reduced 1982/83 world cotton trade even though consumption continued to expand. total world exports were estimated at 18.9 million bales, 7 percent below 1982/81. most of the decline resulted from lower cotton imports by china, japan and taiwan. increased cotton area, particularly in the crucial north china plain, combined with favorable weather to sharply reduce china's dependence on imports. japan was the no. 1 cotton importer for the second consecutive year. the united states and the soviet union were the leading exporters. both experienced declines unfavorable weather reduced the soviet 1982 crop and export availabilities. the ussr purchased cotton from other cotton producing countries to meet comittment in eastern europe. u.s. export movement started briskly, but fell behind the previous year's pace in the second quarter. leading markets were south korea and japan, which accounted for 50 percent of u.s. exports
