during the last decade, the topics of subsector organization and vertical coordination have become increasingly recognized as important factors in the organization and performance of the u.s food and fiber economy. because of the paucity of information about these topics, a seminar was sponsored in november 1974 by the vertical organization sub-committee of north central regional project nc-117 to examine the vertical linkages in agricultural subsectors and discuss alternative coordinating mechanisms. this volume consists of the revised versions of the papers presented at that seminar. the papers focus particular attention on exchange and coordination at the producer-first handler level.
