during development tests (dt) of the tent, extendable, modular, personnel (temper), which is designed to replace three items currently in the army inventory, a number of deficiencies and shortcomings were noted. the cotton boat sateen fabric tore easily and was not durable enough to withstand testing, and the tent liner mildewed excessively. to overcome one of these problems, a vinyl-coated polyester fabric was selected for the tent fabric; however, it was reported that the vinyl coating scuffed and rubbed off easily, and leaked. our studies confirm the lack of mildew resistance of the tent materials. an effective mildew inhibitor is required for the cotton liner to be mildew resistant. the vinyl-coated polyester fabric requires the use of resistant plasticizers or the incorporation of a fungicide. weathering problems with the vinyl-coated fabric still need to be investigated
