planned construction of a diversion channel and levee around the western sides of marion, kansas, necessitated surveying, testing, and excavation of endangered archaeological sites. while some remains of archaic and possibly plains woodland vintage could be identified, the great bulk of recovered materials and information described an extensive occupation of the protohistoric great bend complex excavations at three sites revealed traces of residences, bell-shaped storage pits, material culture, and economic activities that contribute to reconstructing the lifestyle of these people. careful examination of the ethnohistoric literature suggests the marion great bend population may have represented the early 18th century ousita or ascani bands of protohistoric wichita indians
