this citation summarizes a one-page announcement of technology available for utilization. the first chemical sensor in which the chemical modifies the properties of an optical fiber sensing element has been designed, made, and demonstrated at sandia national laboratories. this new concept in chemical sensing has been demonstrated first with hydrogen. preliminary experiments suggest a high sensitivity to hydrogen gas and a wide dynamic range application of the concept to a variety of other chemicals appears feasible. a single-mode optical fiber is coated with palladium palladium expands upon exposure to hydrogen: this stretches the fiber in both length and diameter, which changes the effective optical path length of the fiber. to detect different chemicals, the optical fiber would be coated with different materials that change dimensions in response to particular chemicals
