glass-ceramic headers usually consist of a high-tensile-strength shell, one or several metal rings and/or pins which act as electrical feedthroughs, and a glass-ceramic electrical insulator. in recent headers, the glass-ceramic to metal seals have been fabricated using a lithia-alumina-silica glass and either inconel 718 or hastelloy c-276 as the metal piece parts. auger electron spectroscopy was employed to study the change in surface chemistry on metal surfaces caused by the different manufacturing processes.
