a procedure is recommended for calculating the flammability index of fully etched rigid printed circuit board materials. based on two sets of round-robin tests the procedure uses a needle burner and a series of measurements after the boards had been thermally aged for the equivalent of 10 years at 70 degrees centrigrade, it was found that the flammability was unchanged or was reduced by the accelerated ageing. the effect on flammability of six conformal coatings including polyurethane, silicone elastomer, silicone varnish, epoxide and parylene on epoxide-glass fabric single sided boards was investigated. only the epoxide coating gave a significant, though small, increase in flammability when using the needle burner. using the slow-wire at 960 degrees centigrade no coating burnt after removal of the heat source but there were differences in behaviour during the 30 second application time
