this report examines in detail the structure and administration of eight large local unions (e.g., over 1000 members) through comparative case studies and comparative cross-sectional quantitative survey data collection. much of the survey data was obtained by interviewing local officers, stewards, and members regarding their perceptions of union structure and operations. the locals in the study are self-selected (e.g., they must have agreed to cooperate and participate) and therefore may not be representative of large local unions. the sample does, however, include both public and private sector unions, ranging from garment workers and paperworkers to municipal employees. substantial structural differences were found among the locals with respect to such factors as leadership patterns and communications within the union
